GPA Midstream Association and GPSA mourn the loss of Robert “Bob” Dunn, a respected leader, and friend to many in the oil and gas industry. Dunn served as President of the Gas Processors Association (now GPA Midstream Association) from 2008-10, leaving a lasting impact on the organization and its members.
Dunn began his career in the oil and gas sector with Brown & Root’s Heavy and Overseas Group in Houston in 1975, shortly after earning his MBA from Harvard Business School and his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Tennessee. Over the years, he held key roles with Occidental Petroleum, Champlin Petroleum, and Union Pacific Resources, continuously expanding his expertise and making significant contributions to the energy industry.
During his tenure at Union Pacific, Dunn was Vice President of Gathering and Processing for UPFuels, where he oversaw one of the nation’s largest gathering and processing operations. With 19 gas plants, more than 4,000 miles of gas gathering systems, and a throughput of 1.6 billion cubic feet per day, the company flourished under his guidance, achieving an annual growth rate of 18% until it was sold to Duke Energy Field Services, a predecessor company of Phillips 66.
In 2000, he co-founded Prism Gas Systems, a midstream acquisition company, in partnership with Natural Gas Partners. As President, he led the company through several strategic acquisitions in east Texas and along the Texas Gulf Coast. Prism thrived under his leadership until its acquisition by Martin Midstream Partners in 2005. Dunn went on to co-found Prism Midstream LLC, further solidifying his legacy as a midstream leader.
Colleagues and industry peers remember Dunn as a kind and warm leader who created an environment that inspired continuous learning and the desire to do more. More than once, he advocated for his employees to continue their careers as they transitioned to new companies after acquisitions. Colleagues friends and family appreciated him as an enthusiastic, generous, and knowledgeable mentor who helped individuals achieve their best outcomes.
Dunn enjoyed 45 years of marriage to the love of his life, Judith. They shared a passion for travel and exploration. In retirement, they spent time together on activities like yoga, Pilates, biking, tennis, pickleball, skating, and extensive travel. The world became their playground, providing opportunities for education and enjoyment.
